The Best Destinations Make the Best Cruise
If there is a “heaven on earth,” if there is a paradise, it must be located in the Caribbean Sea. But, if that is the case, there are thousands of heavens on earth. Every Island, every beach, every cove is a piece of paradise. Water warm as a bath and as blue-green as turquoise serves as the great connector between hundreds of island get-aways with one more spectacular than the next.
If you have never been to the Caribbean, you can’t possibly know what you are missing. If you have been, you probably can’t wait to return. And what is the best way to visit these spectacular oases in the middle of the sea? Take a vacation cruise.
To those of us in North America, when we think cruise, four vacations come to mind: A cruise to Alaska, a cruise to the Mexican Riviera, a cruise to Bermuda and, most popular of all, a Caribbean cruise.
The Alaska cruise is wonderful taking you through the inside passage to settlement cities like Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway with spectacular views of calving glaciers in Glacier Bay. But the Alaska cruise is limited in terms of its destination cities and the length of the cruising season. Remember, the Alaskan summer is relatively short and a cruise to Alaska destinations is something West-coasters are more apt to take if for no other reason other than proximity.
Similarly, West-coasters also and for the same reason cruise the Mexican Riviera. If you remember the old TV series “The Love Boat” then destination names like Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Acapulco should ring a bell. All are terrific destinations but again, they are all on the main land and the main land can be quite hot in the summertime.
East-coasters from Main down to around Virginia are likely to cruise to Bermuda. A few hundred miles due East of Charleston, SC, Bermuda sits in the middle of the Gulf Stream and, as a result, enjoys sub-tropical weather most of the year around – certainly you have heard of Bermuda shorts. As a destination, Bermuda is beautiful. The capital, Hamilton is where the cruise ships typically dock and is located in the middle of the island about half way between St. George on the North-Eastern tip and Sommerset on the South-Western tip. Rent a scooter and you can traverse the entire island in a couple of hours with ample time for sight seeing.
North Americans of every stripe almost invariably think the ultimate vacation or holiday cruise is a cruise to the, or rather, through the Caribbean and for several good reasons. First of all the Caribbean destinations are islands, cooled by tropical breezes and the occasional but brief monsoonal rains. Every island is different. Some are American, some are Dutch, some are French, some are Spanish, some are Portuguese. Their heritages, cultures and languages are different. On one island, St. Martin you speak French. Cross over the little “smallest international bridge in the world” and you enter into St. Maarten the Dutch half of the island. The French half caters to luxury and serenity while the Dutch half caters to the tourist trade brought to it weekly on various cruise ships. One island, Hispaniola hosts the Dominican Republic, a very desirable upscale destination with some of the nicer amenities you can imagine. That same island hosts the nation of Haiti, the poorest and least developed country in the western hemisphere.
If you like variety…variety in food, in language, in culture, in history, in shopping, in transportation, in clothing, in hair styles, in adornments, in hospitality and just about anything else you can think of, then you know why you would like a Caribbean cruise.
Whether it is a long planned extravagantly expensive holiday cruise or a cheap cruise booked at the last minute, the destinations are what make a Caribbean cruise unique. Enjoy one as often as you can.
